What a template image API actually costs per 1,000 renders

Entry and mid-tier plans from eight template-based image APIs, divided by the renders each includes — plus what happens at the cap, and the monthly bill at 5,000 and 25,000 renders.

What’s new here: Cost per 1,000 renders at the entry and mid plan of eight template-based image APIs (Bannerbear, Placid, APITemplate.io, HTMLCSStoImage, Robolly, Templated.io, Abyssale, MostlyRender) from dated pricing snapshots (9 June 2026; Bannerbear and Abyssale re-checked 2 October 2026), what each does when the quota runs out, and the cheapest monthly bill for each at 5,000 and 25,000 renders a month.

Every template-based image API — the kind that fills your design with data, not the generative-AI kind — advertises a monthly price. Very few advertise the two numbers that decide what you will actually pay: the price of 1,000 renders, and what happens on the day you run out.

Both are easy to work out from the vendors’ own pricing pages. This article does that for eight template-based image APIs, one of which is ours. We sell MostlyRender, so read the numbers with that in mind — they are all on the public pages linked at the bottom, and the places where a competitor is cheaper than us are in the tables too.

# How these numbers were collected

On 9 June 2026 we recorded the public pricing page of each vendor as part of the research behind our comparison pages: plan names, monthly price, included renders (or credits), and the stated behaviour at the limit. No logins, no sales calls, no estimates. Our weekly price monitor flagged changes at Bannerbear and Abyssale, so both were re-checked on 2 October 2026: Bannerbear’s Enterprise plan now includes 50,000 credits, and Abyssale dropped its $12 Start plan. On 3 October we re-checked the rest: Robolly, Templated.io and HTMLCSStoImage prices are unchanged (HTMLCSStoImage renamed its tiers to Basic, Pro and Scale), and Placid’s credits and limits are unchanged — its prices no longer render without JavaScript, so its dollar figures are still the June ones.

Prices change. Check each vendor’s current pricing before you decide — this reflects our last review. MostlyRender’s own numbers come from our pricing page as of 1 October 2026.

Three conventions:

  • “Render” means one static image. Most vendors call it a credit. Bannerbear counts PDFs and videos as more than one credit; Templated.io counts one credit per PDF page.
  • Monthly prices are monthly billing, except Templated.io, whose page showed only annually billed prices.
  • Per-seat prices are for one seat, billed monthly. Abyssale charges per seat (its annual prices are $36 and $60); everyone else here charges per account.

# Cost per 1,000 renders at the entry plan

The entry plan is the cheapest paid plan that can call the API.

Vendor Entry plan Price / month Included renders Per 1,000
MostlyRender Starter $19 2,000 $9.50
HTMLCSStoImage Basic $14 1,000 $14.00
APITemplate.io Starter (image + PDF) $35 1,500 $23.33
Templated.io Starter (billed annually) $29 1,000 $29.00
Placid Basic $19 500 $38.00
Bannerbear Automate $49 1,000 $49.00
Abyssale Pro (per seat) $45 450 $100.00
Robolly Individual (base) $39 250 $156.00

Two caveats. Robolly’s Individual plan has a slider from 250 to 1,000 renders; the $39 is the base price at 250, and the snapshot did not record the price at the top of the slider. APITemplate.io also sells a PDF-only family, and its PDF Basic plan — $24 for 3,000 PDFs, $8.00 per 1,000 — is cheaper than anything above if all you render is PDFs.

The cheapest way in is HTMLCSStoImage at $14. The cheapest per render at entry is MostlyRender. Those are different questions, and which one matters depends on whether you will use the included renders.

# Cost per 1,000 renders at the mid plan

The mid plan is the next tier up — usually the one a growing product moves to.

Vendor Mid plan Price / month Included renders Per 1,000
MostlyRender Pro $49 10,000 $4.90
HTMLCSStoImage Basic (3,000 tier) $29 3,000 $9.67
APITemplate.io Standard (image + PDF) $89 9,000 $9.89
Robolly Business (base) $129 10,000 $12.90
Bannerbear Scale $149 10,000 $14.90
Placid Pro $39 2,500 $15.60
Templated.io Scale (billed annually) $79 5,000 $15.80
Abyssale Suite (per seat) $75 750 $100.00

The ranking moves further up the ladder. Placid’s Business plan ($89 for 25,000) works out at $3.56 per 1,000, and MostlyRender’s Scale plan ($149 for 50,000) at $2.98. If your volume is high and steady, the third tier is where the real comparison happens.

# What happens when you run out

This is the number that does not appear in a pricing table, and it matters more than the price: it decides whether a busy month costs a little more or breaks a production pipeline.

Vendor At the quota
Bannerbear Hard cap. Rendering stops until you upgrade the plan.
Placid Blocked until credits renew or you upgrade (previews still work). Unused credits roll over up to 2× the monthly budget.
Templated.io Access halts at 100% until you move up a tier.
APITemplate.io No overage rate published on Starter or Standard. Enterprise invoices extra usage at an unpublished rate. The free plan is a hard cap.
Robolly No overage rate published; you can raise the plan’s limit on the slider at any time.
HTMLCSStoImage Overage billed at $10 per 1,000 on every plan.
Abyssale Overage billed at $0.01 per credit ($10 per 1,000).
MostlyRender Overage billed at $5 (Starter), $4 (Pro) or $3 (Scale) per 1,000. Paid plans are never blocked; the free plan stops at 100.

A hard cap is not necessarily bad: it means a bill can never surprise you. But if the images are part of a product — Open Graph cards, invoices, certificates — a cap means the feature silently stops working on the day you are busiest. If you choose a capped vendor, put an alert on usage well before 100%.

# The bill at your volume

Cost per 1,000 rewards whoever includes the most renders, even if you will never use them. The fairer test is: what is the cheapest monthly bill that covers a given volume, using published plans and published overage only?

Vendor 5,000 renders / month 25,000 renders / month
MostlyRender $34 (Starter + 3,000 overage) $109 (Pro + 15,000 overage)
HTMLCSStoImage $49 (Basic 3,000 + 2,000 overage) $149 (Pro, 30,000)
Templated.io $79 (Scale, billed annually) $179 (Enterprise, billed annually)
Placid $89 (Business) $89 (Business)
APITemplate.io $89 (Standard) $179 + unpublished overage (Enterprise, 20,000)
Abyssale (1 seat) $90.50 (Pro + 4,550 overage) $290.50 (Pro + 24,550 overage)
Robolly $129 (Business, base) $129 or more (slider price not in the snapshot)
Bannerbear $149 (Scale) $299 (Enterprise, 50,000)

At 25,000 a month Placid is cheaper than MostlyRender — $89 against our $109 — provided you never exceed 25,000, because Placid blocks rather than bills past it. At 5,000 a month we are the cheapest of the eight. Your number is probably neither, so run your own volume through the tables above.

# How to work out your own number

  1. Estimate renders, not requests. Count one render per image per size, per page for PDFs. If you cache by URL, repeated requests for the same image may not count again — MostlyRender and Robolly both say so for repeat render links.
  2. Find the cheapest plan that covers a normal month, including published overage.
  3. Then price a bad month — a launch, a campaign, a page that goes viral. On a capped plan, that month costs an upgrade or an outage. On a metered plan, it costs the overage rate times the excess.
  4. Check the unit. Credits that cost more for PDFs or videos, or per-seat pricing, can double the real figure.

If you want to compare MostlyRender against one vendor in detail, there is a page for each: Bannerbear, Placid, APITemplate.io, HTMLCSStoImage, Robolly, Templated.io and Abyssale. Each one says where the other product is ahead.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a template image API cost per 1,000 images?

In our 2026 snapshots of eight template-based image APIs, entry plans ranged from $9.50 to $156 per 1,000 included renders, and mid-tier plans from $4.90 to $100. The spread is mostly about how many renders the entry plan includes, not its headline price — most entry plans cost between $14 and $49 a month.

What happens when an image API hits its monthly quota?

It depends on the vendor, and it is rarely on the pricing page's headline. Bannerbear, Placid and Templated.io block or halt rendering until you upgrade; HTMLCSStoImage and Abyssale bill overage at about $10 per 1,000; APITemplate.io and Robolly don't publish an overage rate; MostlyRender bills $3–$5 per 1,000 and keeps rendering on paid plans.

Is cost per 1,000 renders the right way to compare image APIs?

It is the right first number, but compare at your own volume. A plan that looks cheap per 1,000 can force a big upgrade the month you go one render over a hard cap, and a plan with a large included amount wastes money if you never use it. Work out the cheapest plan, plus overage, that covers your expected month — and the month after a traffic spike.
